A loose connection in a light fitting caused the cable to overheat. Parts of the insulation had burnt and started to crumble away exposing the live conductors.

There were signs of charring in the loft space above the light and the owners were lucky a fire hadn't taken hold. 

Make sure all connections are secure. 
If in doubt, hire a competent person.
